Syringes & units

Insulin syringes, units and millilitres

Units and millilitres are different scales and mixing them up changes your measurement a hundredfold. Here are the conversions for the 0.5ml syringes we supply.

Nearly 900 of the questions we get are about syringes, and most come down to one thing: units and millilitres are different scales, and mixing them up changes your measurement by a factor of a hundred.

What we supply

Evra supplies 0.5ml insulin syringes, marked to 50 units. That is the only size we stock, and it is the size the tables across our guides assume.

One full syringe is 0.5ml, which is 50 units. So 1ml of liquid is two full syringes, not one. This is the single most common mix-up we correct.

The conversions

0.2ml20 unitstwo fifths

Units are universal across insulin syringes, 1ml is 100 units on any of them. What changes between syringe sizes is how much one syringe holds. A 0.5ml syringe tops out at 50 units, so anything above that takes more than one.

Working out how many you need

Take the total volume of liquid in your vial after reconstitution and divide by 0.5ml. A vial reconstituted with 2ml of bacteriostatic water holds four full syringes' worth of liquid.

If you are drawing smaller amounts than a full syringe, you will get proportionally more draws , but plan on one syringe per draw regardless, since they are single-use.

Handling

Common questions

What size syringes does Evra supply?
0.5ml insulin syringes, marked to 50 units. That is the only size we supply.
How many units are in 1ml?
100 units. Units are a universal insulin-syringe marking, so 1ml is always 100 units regardless of syringe size, but a 0.5ml syringe only holds up to 50 of them, so 1ml takes two full syringes with the ones we supply.
How many syringes come in a pack?
Ten per pack. Each is individually wrapped and single-use.
Can I reuse a syringe?
No. They are single-use. The needle dulls after one pass through a stopper and reuse risks contaminating the vial.
What gauge are they?
Fine-gauge insulin needles, suited to drawing from a reconstituted vial.
